ROAD WORKS:

Limerick County Council has been doing road works around the parish in recent months. In the village, the wall to the west of the village has been repaired and resurfacing has taken place at Railway Mews. Major road re-alignment has taken place at Rockhill Cross and this is now finished. Junction layout changes have also taken place at O’Rourke’s Cross. These badly needed works will hopefully make things safer for motorists.

45 DRIVE:

Winners of last week’s 45 Drive were Tom O’Rourke and John Moloney and Katherine O’Regan and Sean Blake with seven games. Raffle prizes went to Noreen Hayes, Katherine O’Regan, Martin Carroll and Ann Potter. The 45 Drive continues in the Community Centre every Tuesday night, starting at 8.30 pm sharp.

The Community Games Committee would like to express its gratitude to the Rockhill Rovers and Bruree GAA lotto for their generosity in supporting the community games. GAA:

Presentation and Awards Night: Bruree GAA will hold it’s annual presentation and awards night on Saturday, February 25th, at the Central bar, Bruree. The night will start at 8.00 pm sharp. The Bruree team who won the county minor hurling title in 1987 will be special guests to mark twenty five years since they won the title. They will receive special presentations and the club’s annual awards will also be presented on the night. Hurler and footballer of the year as well as Hall of Fame and Sports Personality recipients will be announced. Everyone is welcome to attend and admission is free.

Mackey Draw: Bruree GAA will once again promote the Limerick GAA Development Draw for 2012 as one of its main fundraisers. The top prize each month is €15,000 and the subscription is €100 for the year. Please support your club and your county by joining the draw with any of the local promoters or any committee member.

BRUREE LADIES FOOTBALL:

Bruree Ladies Football will hold their AGM on Monday 20th of February. The meeting will take place in Bruree National School at 8.00 pm. Following the success of last year, our adult team are now competing at Juniorlevel. As always we would love to see new members so all are welcome. This year Bruree Ladies Football is also looking towards the option of entering underage team(s). We would like to invite any interested parents of girls under 12 years of age to attend the meeting to discuss this further.

A presentation night will also take place to this year’s county winning team on Saturday 25th of February at the Central Bar Bruree from 8.00 pm. All are welcome!

Finally Bruree Ladies Football would like to congratulate Sinéad Costello on winning a South Limerick All-Star Award. The awards night will take place in Bulgaden on Saturday 3rd of March.

GAA:

Award One Courses: Limerick Coaching & Games are holding three Award 1 youth courses which are aimed at club coaches who will be coaching youth teams (U13-U18). Participants must have completed a foundation award course before they can apply for the Award one courses. Participants must attend the entire course to ensure certification at Award One Youth Level. Booking is essential as there are a limited number of places available on each course. These are dual courses and the course fee is €50 per person. Anyone wishing to attend these courses must complete the application forms and return it by Friday, February 10th, for the Youth Courses. ROCKHILL ROVERS

Rockhill Rover kept up their fantastic form again on Sunday, when beating Glantine 2-0 away from home. It really was a team performance with Rockhill’s back four and midfield outstanding on the day. And as usual their front two worked tirelessly to keep the ball in the opposition half. The lads who came on also played their part in the victory. The goals were a fantastic effort from Gerard O’Dea in the first half and a great finish from Jimmy O’Dea late in the second half. Rockhill are now top of the league for the time being and are pushing hard for promotion to the Premier League next season.

ROCKHILL ROVERS:

Rockhill Rovers played League leaders, Carrig Celtic, in Stonemountain Park on Sunday in their second game of the New Year. Rockhill dominated the first half, but unfortunately couldn’t make the pressure count. In the second half, Carrig came into the game a bit more and put Rockhill under a lot of pressure. Fortunately for Rockhill, their back four were outstanding and dealt with it well. Carrig got the opener with about 10 minutes to go and looked like they would take all 3 points. However Rockhill equalised through an Anthony O'Shea header to take a fully deserved a point from the game. Full credit to the players who never gave up and were brilliant from start to finish.

PATTERN DAY:

The Pattern Day devotions to St. Munchin took place recently at St. Munchin’s Well in the village. The parish choir attended as well as visiting priests and a large attendance from the parish. St Munchin’s Well was a site of devotion in the village and the parish well over one hundred year’s ago. Irish folklorist Kevin Danaher described a well in Bruree called St. Munchin’s well which had dried up but the site was still there, marked by a number of boulders. According to him, the feast day of the well was January 2nd and the day was a parish holiday. He said that the water was claimed to cure bad stomachs and sore eyes. The legend behind the well is that St.Munchin caused the well to spring up when he was refused a drink. St. Munchin is the patron saint of Limerick Diocese. Details about his life are shrouded in legends but it is believed that he lived in the second half of the 7th century and may have been born in Co. Clare. His name in Irish is Mainchín meaning little monk. It is said that while he was building his first church in Limerick, the locals refused to help him. As a result, St. Munchin placed a curse on the city that the stranger would flourish and the native would perish, thus the Curse of St. Munchin.

David T. Dwane’s “Early Life of Eamon de Valera”, first published in 1922, also mentions St. Munchin - “It was the practice in Bruree to have a special sermon on the feast of St. Munchin, the patron saint of the parish.Young de Valera was sure to be present on such occasions.”

Rockhill Rovers played their first game of the New Year on Sunday against Pallaskenry, beating those 2-0. It was a good performance from the lads and a good start to the year and were it not for their goalkeeper, the winning margin could have been a lot more. The goals came from a headed effort from Michael Lane and a screamer of a shot from Kieran O'Rourke.

Girls Football: The girls from 3rd to 6th class played some fantastic football in the schools football competition over the past couple of weeks. In the first match against Hospital girls football team, Bruree’s girls won on a 7-7 to 0-0 scoreline. The captain was Emma Hogan and the scorers were Emma Howard 2-3, Emma Hogan 2-2, Lauren Corrigan 2-0, Mary Murphy 1-0 and Timea Fabryova 0-2. In the second match, Bruree played Croom. The final score was Bruree 6-8 Croom 0-0. The scorers were Emma Howard 2-2, Timea Fabryova 2-0, Lauren Corrigan 2-0, Emma Hogan 0-4, Mary Murphy 0-1 and Grainne Monaghan 0-1. The captain was Grace Donworth. In the final againstGalbally school, the Bruree girls had a narrow victory on a 2-4 to 2-2 scoreline. The scorers were Lauren Corrigan 2-2, Emma Howard 0-1 and Emma Hogan 0-1. The cup was presented to the Bruree captain, Emma Hogan, much to the delight of the supporters. Many thanks are extended to the supporters who gave them great encouragement and also to the trainers of the team - Mrs McSweeney, Miss Hannon and Mr. Woulfe. Bruree GAA:

A.G.M. The Annual General Meeting of Bruree GAA was held on Friday last in Bruree School. There was a large attendance at the most important meeting of the year. Vice-chairman, Gerard Mullane welcomed everyone and called for a minutes silence as a mark of respect for those connected with the club who had passed away during the past twelve months. He thanked everyone who had assisted in any way with the running of the club during 2011 - members and officers and committee, players, team mentors, sponsors, Bruree National School and parents. Assistant secretary, Brendan Hogan, delivered a very comprehensive report on the years activities. The club played over fifty games during the year between competitive and challenge games in Senior and Junior Hurling and Intermediate Football.

Treasurer, Johnny Wall, also presented a detailed report which sowed the club to be in a healthy financial state.

Sportsfield Development:

As part of its ongoing fundraising, the Rockhill Bruree Sportsfield Development Committee will hold a bag pack at Tesco in the Crescent Shopping Centre on Monday next, December 19th between 1.00 and 5.00 pm.Anyone who would be willing and available to lend a hand for an hour should contact Mai McKiernan (086-3083252) or any member of the committee. Your help would be appreciated.

Bruree National School:

Team Hope Shoeboxes: Many thanks to all the parents and children and other adults who sent in shoeboxes to the local school for the poor children all over the world. A total of 141 boxes were taken from our school to the local depot in Limerick. There they were checked and sealed be fore being transported all over the world.

Art: A total of 95 pictures were entered from our local school in the Kilmallock and District Credit Union Art Competition. The following children were prizewinners: 7 years and under: 1st Emily Bray 2nd Elaine Frawley 3rd Robert Lynch 8-10 years: 1st Aine Hayden 2nd Matthew Howard 3rd Sam Williams 11-13 years: 1st Rachel Williams 2nd Lauren Corrigan 3rd Emma Howard 7 years and under (special category): 1st Niamh O’Brien Those children who came first or second in that competition were entered in the Limerick and Clare Credit Union Art Competition. In that competition Emily Bray was first and so was Rachel Williams. Niamh O’Brien was second. Emily’s and Rachel’s pictures will now be forwarded to the All Ireland Credit Union competition. Sympathy: The club extends it’s sympathy to the family of Mick Kearney, Charleville and formerly of Rockhill, who died recently. Mick was a member of the Limerick Junior Hurling All-Ireland winning panel in 1935 and won an All-Ireland Junior Hurling medal with Cork in 1947. He played initially as a schoolboy with Rockhill and went on to play Junior Hurling with Bruree and later played with various clubs in London before returning to play with Ballyhea and Charleville, winning a County Intermediate Hurling medal with the latter in 1946 and 1947. Mick was very proud of Bruree’s County senior victory in 2006 and the Daly Cup was taken to his residence. Charleville’s recent successes also brought him great joy. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.

Rockhill Rovers finally got to play St Ita’s in the league on Sunday last. Rockhill, who had home advantage, scraped by with a 2-1 win, the goals coming from a peach of a free kick from Stevie O’Halloran and the winner scored by Donie Deady. The game should have been over as a contest in the second half but for some poor wides, but we kept plugging away and got the winner.

Ireland Reaching Out:

The Ireland Reaching Out is based on a simple idea; instead of waiting for people of Irish descent to come home to Ireland to trace their roots, local Irish parish communities go the other way. At a town land, village and parish level, local Irish communities identify who left their neighbourhoods, and trace them and their descendants worldwide, proactively engaging with them and inviting them to become part of an extended “virtual” community with their place of origin. To initiate what the project hopes will become a lifelong relationship, the parish community, once it has identified its living descendants, will extend an invitation to a “Week of Welcomes” to be held in each parish every summer, with the objective of attracting 25-30 people back to each parish. The “Week of Welcomes” promises to be a fantastic experience, where people of Irish Heritage from around the world will gather to be welcomed and engaged by people in their local parish communities, in a place of common ancestry where a deep and real connection is shared. On visiting the community from which their people once came, they are introduced to the local history and the culture as it both once was and is today. Central to the project is the opportunity for people of Irish heritage from abroad to meet real Irish people as they live their daily lives, in a place where a deep bond of place (and often blood) is shared.

Juvenile GAA

Bruree juvenile GAA club held their AGM recently in the school hall and we were delighted with the very large attendance. The following officers were returned for 2012;
Chairman Mike Mullane, Vice Chairman Ger Sexton, Secretary Jimmy Feane, Treasurer Joan Quirke, Assistant Secretary Jim O Connell, Assistant to Registrar Declan Sexton.
The meeting agreed to put forward the name of Joan Quirke for consideration by the Senior club for the position of Club Children’s Officer. Frank Finn and Frank Barrington were nominated to represent the Juvenile GAA club on the Field Development Committee. Team Managers and mentors for 2012 were also selected at the meeting.
Our Under 14 footballers brought silverware back to the parish by winning the County Final of the 11 a side competition in a fiercely contested game against Granagh/Ballingarry. The team was captained by Cian McCarthy who led by example throughout and he was ably supported by Terence Buckley who was a tower of strength at mid field.
Aaron Fitzgerald was a constant threat in the full forward line. Shane Feane and Dara O’Driscoll were always dependable in the half back positions and Sean Quirke and Brian Sexton put in huge efforts in the full back line. Eoin O’Connell showed once again why he is one of the best young goalkeepers around in hurling and football with a very solid display. Seamus Lyons scored a real gem of a goal at a vital stage in the game. Tommy Cronnolly grew in confidence as the game progressed and won vital possession when we were under most pressure in the last quarter of the game.
Sean McCarthy and Gearoid McCarthy worked tirelessly throughout. While we had our fair share of luck with the ball hitting the crossbar on a few occasions nobody can deny that this bunch of lads richly deserved their success after coming through the entire competition undefeated. Congratulations and well done to all concerned and thanks to Raymond Moloney for once again sponsoring the tournament. The winners were as follows:

Bruree Juvenile GAA club will hold their AGM this Friday night, November 25th, at 8pm in the school hall. We hope to have a good attendance at this important meeting and we would especially like to see many parents and new people to the parish at the meeting.

The Juvenile GAA awards night will take place on Sunday week, December 4th, at Bulgaden Castle. Proceedings will get underway at 5.30pm and will finish at 8.30.

One Man Band

Ballyhoura Community Radio (BCR92.6FM) will launch its radio documentary “The One Man Band” at the Charleville Park Hotel on Monday, December 5th, at 9.00pm the documentary tells the story of the late great Johnny Barrett and music for the night will be provided by Dermot Lyons and guests. Tickets are €10 and are available locally from John Harrold, any of the other BCR92.6FM presenters or at the door on the night.

Social Media Course

Ballyhoura Development are organising a course entitled “Social Media for Community and Voluntary Groups”, delivered by the Carmichael Centre, for community and voluntary groups in the Ballyhoura area. This one day course will be held in the Hospital Family Resource Centre, Hospital, Co. Limerick, on Saturday 11^th February 2012, from 10am to 4pm. The cost of the course is €30 per person. Places are limited and are allocated on a first come first serve basis.

Ballyhoura Development are also running a Wordpress course in Scoil Pól, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick, on Saturday 28^th January from 10am to 2pm. The cost of the course is €20 per person. Places are limited and are allocated on a first come first served basis.

The Right Note

Rockhill Bruree Sportsfield Development Committee will present The Right Note, a gala night of music, song and dance in the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Bruree on Friday December 9th. Doors will open at 7.00 pm and the presentation will start at 7.30 pm. MC for the night will be Micheal Ò Riain. Admission is just €10 for adults and €5 for children under 12. There will also be a monster raffle on the night for prizes including a weekend away, gift vouchers, meal vouchers and hampers galore. Tickets are available from committee members.

Sportsfield

The AGM of the Rockhill Bruree Sportsfield Development Committee was held on Friday night last at St. Patrick’s National School. There was a large and representative attendance which was welcomed by chairman Noel O’Halloran. Noel also thanked the committee for their work to date and pointed out that the feasibility study and needs assessment had been completed. The following officers were elected for the coming year: Chairman Noel O’Halloran, Secretary Elaine Horgan, Treasurer Joseph Carey, PRO John Harrold, Assistant PRO/IT Chris Culhane, Committee Jimmy Woulfe, Noel Brosnan, Sean O’Connor, Gerard Murphy, Bernie Sheehan, Rebecca Murphy, Kit O’Halloran, Mai McKiernan, Judy Tobin, Eamon O’Dea, Brendan Hogan and James Lyons. A couple of fundraising initiatives have been put in place. A musical evening will be held in Bruree Church on Friday, December 9th (full details elsewhere in these notes). A bag packing session has been organised for Tescoat the Crescent Shopping Centre for Monday December 19th from 1.00 to 5.00 pm. Anyone interested in helping out is asked to contact Mai McKiernan.

The local Community Games committee will remain inactive unless sufficient numbers of people contact the local secretary at 087-2847429 and express their intention to support in the organisation of local activities.

If sufficient interest is forthcoming, a further meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 15th.

Bruree Juvenile GAA was very annoyed and disappointed with events in Effin when we believed we were taking part in an Under 14 11 a side County Final only to discover after the match that in fact it was a Semi Final. The official notification to the club and the published fixtures in the Limerick Leader and Vale Star also had stated that it was a County Final. The Juvenile County Board subsequently accepted responsibility for the mistake and apologised for the confusion.

Congratulations to the Under 14 footballers for their great display in defeating Galtee Gaels in the Semi Final and we wish them all the best for the final whenever it is played.

Our Under 14 hurlers qualified for the county final compliments of a winover Caherline at Knockea. Bruree were the much stronger team and were wellserved on the day by outstanding performances from Daire O’Driscoll, SeanQuirke and Seamus Lyons as well as Jack Murphy when he was introduced. Thecounty final will take place on next Saturday, October 22nd, in Dromcollogherat 3.30 pm. Killeedy will providethe opposition.

Open Night

An open night will be held at Bruree National School on tonight, Thursday, October 13^th, at 8.00 pm to outline draft plans for the development of Bruree sportsfield. This is a follow on to the consultation with the parish which took place recently and results of that consultation will be presented on the night. There was a very positive informative response to the questionnaire which went out to the parish and it is hoped that everyone who made the effort to reply will attend on the night. Thesportsfield is very much a focal point within the community so it is important that the community continue to be involved and support the project. We look forward to and welcome your attendance on the night.

Radio Course

Introduction to Community Radio (FETAC Level 4 Community Radio) will start on October 13th, 2011 at Ballyhoura Community Radio, Smiths Lane, Charleville, Co. Cork. The course aims to give learners grounding in both the ethos of community radio and in the practical skills. The course will take 21 hours over seven weeks and will mix hands-on skills with theory in each session. The course is open to anybody from any background. It is particularly suited to new volunteers in community radio stations, and those interested in community media/and or radio programme production. Basic IT skills would be an advantage but are not essential. This course is a nationally accredited course leading to a FETAC Level 4 in Community Radio (Component Certificate) on the National Framework of Qualifications. Fun Day: What a great event this turned out to be! The organisers had a lot of headaches in the days running up to the event. Would it rain so that there would be enough water in the river to float the ducks? Would the day be dry so that the event could go ahead? Eventually early on Sunday morning, after consulting Met Eireann and many other oracles, the decision was made to go ahead with the event. This turned out to be the correct decision, as apart from a brief shower, the day was perfectly suited to the event. The day started with the duck race on the river at Bruree and a great crowd turned out on the river bank to see almost seven hundred yellow ducks make their way down river. They made a spectacular sight as they were carried by the current to the finish line just above the bridge. The first duck past the post was sponsored by Tom Hedderman while the next four were owned by Gerry McCarthy, Pat Thompson, Maeve Hogan and Anna Sheehan. Then it was off to the sportsfield for a host of events and activities to keep young and not so young entertained. Bouncy obstacles courses and slides, pony rides, wellie throwing, golf, long puck penalty kicks and wet sponge events all attracted great attention. There was a beautiful selection of confectionery for the cake sale and the barbeque saw queues from early on. Traditional Irish music entertained the crowds and there was huge excitement at the Under 8 and Under 10 hurling blitz. Many other side shows kept the crowds entertained until the finale at 5.30 pm which was the Tug of War final. The ladies event was won by the Noel Brosnan managed team of Caroline O’Connor, Elaine O’Dwyer, Marge Crowley, Marcella Byrnes, Gaye Carey, Louise Lynch and Mary Sexton. The men’s event was won by William Horgan, Jim O’Shea, John O’Shea, Ger Sheehan and Sean Deane, managed by Mike Mullane. Thanks to everyone who turned out on the day and all those who helped in any and many ways to make the event such a success.
Champions: Congratulations to Effin and Peter Finn on winning the county Intermediate Hurling title at the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday.

St. Munchin’s Well
Parishioners will have noticed that recent construction work at St. Munchin’s Well in the village has been almost completed. The source of the well was located and it has been made accessible. The well has a pattern day tradition going back well over one hundred and twenty years and possibly much longer. Tradition has it that the water from the well was effective for stomach ailments.
To finish off the work, landscaping is now needed. Anyone who would like to donate a shrub for the landscaping can drop it off at the back of Costcutters in the village, in a plastic bag for cleanliness purposes.

The duck race is timed for 1.30 pm and family fun day activities will commence at the sportsfield immediately afterwards. The prize to the sponsor of the winning duck will be a flat screen television and there will be numerous other prizes for placed ducks. You can sign up as a duck sponsor with any member of the club committee and the cost is only €5. Activities there will include an underage hurling blitz, pony rides, live music, tug of war, face painting, toddlers slide, cake sale, push the bale and a barbeque. GAA celebrities will also attend.

Tug of War: There will be an entry fee of €5 per person for the tug of war competition and a team will consist of five men. Any team wishing to enter the tug of war should contact Mike Sexton (087-9188375) before Friday, September 23rd.

On Saturday Bruree had a great win in the Junior B Championship Final against Rathkeale at Croagh. The final score of Bruree 2-14 V Rathkeale 1-3 does the Bruree girl’s great credit. Well done girls.

Juvenile GAA

U12 Hurling League: Brú Rí 6-6 Granagh-Ballingarry 1- 2 The Under 12 Hurling League resumed on Thursday, September 1st, with Bruree playing Granagh-Ballingarry in a home game. The hosts were on the offensive from the very first moments of the match with three points followed by a goal in the fifth minute from Seán Quirke. A goal some seven minutes later from Brian McCarthy put Bruree firmly in the lead, and an additional point just before the half-time whistle gave the home team a score of 2-4 at this point while the visitors had not yet scored.
The second half got off to a slow start, though Granagh-Ballingarry started to fight back by getting a goal in the opening minutes: this was answered by a point from Seán Quirke. There followed a period of intense play with both sides battling for possession: Granagh-Ballingarry wrested two points from this struggle. Towards the end of the match Bruree surged ahead again, with Brian McCarthy and Sam Cronnolly getting two goals each, and Gearóid McCarthy putting over a point for good measure. The final score was Bruree 6-6 and Granagh-Ballingarry 1-2.
The Under 12 panel continued to perform well in this match, with great teamwork and co-ordination between the players. The defence work by Emma Howard, Emma Hogan and David O’Connell played an important role in Bruree’s success, while goalkeeper Jimmy Leslie-Madigan made some great saves. It must be said however that Bruree’s skill and determination was to the fore in every position on the field. Well done to everyone and keep up the good work!
Bag Packing: Bruree Juvenile GAA held a very successful bag-packing fund raiser in Super Valu in Charleville. We would like to thank everybody who contributed donations .We would also like to thank the Management and Staff of Supervalu who facilitated us and who were so helpful at all times. Uganda Trip

Caroline Geary will head off to Uganda on October 14th October as a volunteer with A-Z Children’s Charity, a charity which provides the most vulnerable HIV infected orphans and children in Uganda with the highest standard of health care and education available. There she will be involved in a project helping in the organisations new paediatric clinic as well as working in schools and building projects. She has held a number of fundraising events over the past few weeks but there is still time to contribute. You can also donate online at www.mycharity.ie/event/caroline_gearys_event/. All money collected will go to helping children with AIDS/HIV in Uganda.

Community Games

Congratulations to Laura Frawley on a great performance at the Community Games national Finals in Athlone last weekend. Laura qualifed from the first rounds of the Under10 80m to compete in the semi-finals. She qualified from her semi-final to take part in the final on Sunday in which she came a very creditable sixth. Well done, Laura!

Juvenile GAA

Under 13: Football Quarter Final Bruree 2-5 Monagea 1-6 Bruree played Monagea inRaheenagh in the quarterfinal of the Under 13 football competition. The match was only finalised on the Monday of last week and we had to take the field without some members of the squad. The team lined out with players taking on unfamiliar positions and in the first half we struggled to get a foothold in the game. Monagea settled into the game quickly and after an even enough start to the game started to tack on some impressive scores. Their point taking was of a very high standard and we really struggled to compete in all sectors of the field. Sean Quirke converted two frees during this period but Monagea scored an impressive 1-4, the goal coming just before half time to leave us with an uphill task in the second half.

At half time the team knew that they were twenty minutes away from ending their interest in the championship unless they upped their game. On resumption Bruree went on the front foot and started to win the 50:50 contests. Cathal Barrington and Jimmy Leslie-Madigan carried the ball to great effect and had the Monagea defense in all sorts of trouble with Jimmy unlucky not to get at least one goal. The pressure started to tell and points fromDaire O’Driscoll and Sean Quirke kept us in the hunt. The game turned with a great goal by Sean Quirke and Bruree really started to believe that this game was there for the taking. This followed great build-up play from Brian McCarthy. This was followed by a point by Brian McCarthy and then Sean Quirke got behind the last defender to punch a great goal which incredibly put us one point ahead. Daire O’Driscoll followed up with a great point and then it was all hands to the pump to keep Monagea out.

The game built to a great finish with both sides giving everything but Bruree were standing firm and working incredibly hard for each other. We had a few heart stopping moments with the upright and then the cross bar being struck but we held on for a memorable victory. Sean Quirke was excellent throughout getting 2-2 of our total while we had DaireO’Driscoll and Brian McCarthy working incredibly hard in midfield. Ciaran Sexton marshalled the defence from goals, Owen Carey was the last defender on a number of occasions but always came away with the ball, ably assisted by the abrasive Edward Moore, Brian Sexton was putting his body on the line in the second half and Jack Murphy was linking well with the midfielders. Up front the pace and skill of Sean Quirke, Cathal Barrington and Jimmy Leslie-Madigan had the defence in trouble with David O’Connell winning the tussles with the big Monagea fullback.

This was a great display of heart and commitment from this team but it is important to note that no medals were given for this match and sterner tests await us.

Congrats: Congratulations and best wishes to Aaron Fitzgerald, Shane Feane and Terence Galvin Buckley who will be on the Limerick hurling teams competing in the Tony Forristal and Sonny Walsh competitions next weekend in Waterford.

Under 16: Our Under 16 hurlers had a very good win over St Kieran’s in a match played in Bruree last week. There were big performances from Cian McCarthy at full back, Pa Carey and Darren Kelly.

Bag Packing: Bruree Juvenile GAA Club will be having a bag packing fund raising event at Supervalu in Charleville on this Friday, 2nd September, from 10am to 6pm. Uganda Trip

Caroline Geary will head off to Uganda in October as a volunteer with A-Z Childrens Charity. There she will be involved in a project helping childrens with AIDS/HIV in the organisations new paediatric clinic as well as working in schools and building projects. As part of her fundraising campaign, Caroline will hold a beach party themed fancy dress night at the 41 Bar (Harneys) in Kilmallock on this Sunday night, September 3rd, starting at 9.00 pm. Senior Hurling: Bruree’s Senior hurlers travelled to Clarina on Friday evening to play Na Piarsaigh in the third round of the county championship. While we saw some good hurling from Bruree in spells, loss of focus on a number of occasions let the opposition in for vital scores. With almost twenty five minutes gone in the opening half, Bruree led by 0-8 to 0-3 and were well worth that lead. However, the closing minutes of the half saw Na Piarsaigh capitalise on Bruree lack of concentration and saw them run into a 2-6 to 0-8 lead. Bruree’s first half scores came from Gerard O’Brien, Michael Lane, Paddy Kelly (2), Jimmy O’Dea and Dessie Lenihan, all from play and a free and a sixty five from Gerard O’Dea. Bruree started off well in the second half and points from play from Kieran O’Dea and james V. O’Brien and from a free from Gerard O’Dea saw the gap close to just two points. But a goal for Na Piarsaigh on thirteen minutes spelt the end of Bruree’s chances and with Bruree reduced to thirteen, the writing was on the wall. Bruree could only manage two more points one from play from Paddy Kelly and one from a free from Stephen O’Halloran. Bruree again showed patches of good hurling throughout the second half but these yielded little by way of scores and it was Na Piarsaigh who won on a 3-12 to 0-13 scoreline. Bruree were short a number of influential players and one wonders what the result might have been had these been available. The Bruree team was Eamon Sexton, Vincent Stanton, Kieran O’Rourke, John Paul Murphy, Stephen O’Halloran, Gerard O’Brien, Dessie Lenihan, Michael Lane, James V. O’Brien, Gerard O’Dea, Jimmy O’Dea, Paddy Kelly, Anthony O’Shea, Kieran O’Dea and Brendan Hogan.

Bruree U13 Hurling versus Monagea in Monagea on Wednesday 28th July

On Wednesday last our U13 hurlers travelled to Monagea to play the last of the hurling league games. Monagea had a great start to the game and were on top in all areas of the field. Their fast direct style had the Bruree defence under constant pressure and Sean Quirke in goals was our busiest player in the first half. A succession of well taken scores from Monagea left us facing an uphill task in the second half. Sam Cronnolly came on as sub goalie and played well. His brother Tommy had the better of his man in the half back line as Bruree started to play with more spirit and determination. Brian McCarthy got through an amount of work and was rewarded with a well taken point. Up front Sean Quirke had the Monagea defence under pressure and he took some fine scores. Cathal Barrington worked very hard and constantly took his man on. Shane Hannon was rewarded for his hard work with a goal and Ciaran Sexton worked very hard throughout. However Monagea were much the better side on the night and deserved their win.

Our next scheduled game in the Hurling competition is the 24^th August which will be the quarter final.

Bruree U13 Hurling versus Granagh-Ballingarry in Bruree on Wednesday, 13th July

Our U13 Hurlers played Granagh-Ballingarry in the latest round of this competition in the local field. From the beginning it was evident that the few weeks without competitive hurling had taken its toll with our rustiness very evident. We struggled to get our first touch going and while we did start to dominate the game our sharpness wasn’t there. Gradually through the first half we came to grips with the game and good score taking from Sean Quirke and Tommy Cronnollywas a feature of the half. Some changes were made at half time and our subs all performed very well when given the opportunity. Cathal Barrington scored a fine goal off his left side and this, along with a well taken opportunist goal by Eoin O’ Driscoll, were some of the highlights of the second half. Jonathan Fitzpatrick had a fine game at corner back as did Jack Murphy whose close marking and tenaciousness ensured Bruree’s goal was rarely in danger.

Sportsfield News

Representatives of Rockhill/Bruree Sportsfield Development Committee have bee calling to each home in the parish. They are delivering a survey which details some of the plans for the parish sportsfield and seeks your views on those plans. The committee was set up in January 2008 to look at ways of developing the sportsfield. Funding has been secured from Ballyhoura Development Ltd., under the Rural Development Programme, to do a feasibility study and needs assessment and to draw up plans based on the findings of these. It would be appreciated if you would complete the survey so that it can be collected in due course. If there is nobody at home the survey will be left and representatives will endeavour to time collection when someone is home. If you feel that you will not be available, the questionnaire can be returned to any of the following: Noel O’Halloran, Eamon O’Dea, John Harrold, Noel Brosnan, Elaine Horgan, Sean O’Connor, Gerard Murphy, Jamie Lyons, Jimmy Woulfe, Joe Carey, Bernie Sheehan, Rebecca Murphy, Mai McKiernan and Judy Tobin. Defibrillators

The Rockhill Bruree Defibrillator Group will hold a Golf Classic at Charleville Golf Club on Saturday, July 16th. The entry fee is €90 for a team of three. To enter a team or for any other details contact John at 087-2701771. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Juvenile GAA
The Under 16 hurlers had a hard fought one point win over Croagh/Kilfinny in Bruree. The outcome was in the balance right to the final whistle but our lads stood up to the test of character. Patrick Carey put in a great display in defence and others to perform well on the night were Aaron Fitzgerald and Darren Kelly.
The Under 16 footballers travelled to Fedamore and secured a good victory over the home side. Best for Bruree on the night were Rory O‘Shughnessy, David Considine and Ronan O’Halloran.
Summer Cul Camp: Thanks to everyone involved in last week’s Cul Camp at Bruree Sportsfield. Almost seventy children attended and were coached in the basic skills of hurling and football. Thanks to all the children who attended and to the coaches and those from the club who helped out during the week. The gear and medals were presented on Friday with Kiearn O’Rourke, Graeme Mulcahy and James Ryan on hand to offer advice and the hand out the medals. They, along with Stephen McDonogh, also spent a long time signing autographs on hurleys, jerseys and arms for delighted fans.

45 Drive

Winners of last week’s 45 Drive were Fintan Stone and Mike O’Brien and Tom O’Rourke and John Moloney with eight games. Raffle prizes went to Fintan Stone, Josephine Lynch, Eddie Ryan and Brendan O’Kelly. The 45 Drive continues in the Community Centre every Tuesday night, starting at 8.30 pm sharp.

Bruree’s Junior hurlers scored a good victory over Kilmallock at Bruree in Friday night’s championship game. There was little between the sides in the first half but it was Bruree who were doing a little better. The game intensified as time went on and most of the first half scores came in the last ten minutes of the half. Bruree went in at half time with a four point lead on a 1-7 to 1-3 scoreline. The Bruree goal came from an injury time penalty sent to the net by goalkeeper Daniel Lane. All bar one of Bruree’s first half points came from play with Patrick Deady, Andrew Sexton (2), Mark Noonan (2) and David Hogan all finding the range. David also converted a free. Kilmallock had a good third quarter but points from David Hogan (one from play and two from frees) kept Bruree a safe distance in front. Bruree came into the game more in the final ten minutes and points from play from Andrew Sexton and Mark Noonan and from frees from David Hogan and Patrick Deady saw them with seven points to spare with five minutes to go. A Kilmallock goal was quickly cancelled out when Andrew Sexton and David Hogan combined to find the Kilmallock net. A point from Michael O’Donnell and a goal from Kilmallock completed the scoring to leave the final score Bruree 2-15 Kilmallock 3-7.
