TIDY TOWNS

Total Marks 249/400

Overall Development Approach: Marks 40/50 The Work Plan was extremely interesting but lacked some detail in regard to work undertaken for this year’s competition. Your work seems to have excellent local support and you have very good lines of communications with the various supporting agencies.

The Built Environment: Marks 35/50 The old Mill and water wheel represents a most important part of the history of Bruree. The School building and surrounding grounds were superbly presented and congratulations to the pupils and staff on this achievement. The buildings along the Main Street with a few exceptions sit well into that environment. Landscaping: Marks 37/50 Landscaping is one of your great strengths in Bruree and the river plays such a major role in that. The Riverside Park area is a most attractive well maintained amenity resource. The landscaping at the Church was quite eye catching as was some great landscaping work done in association with private property.

Wildlife and Natural Amenities: Marks 27/50 The Park and river area is such a great place for wildlife. Off the Charleville road the small riverside amenity area was admired though the gates needed to be painted.

Litter Control: Marks 25/50 The Bring Centre does not appear to have the best of locations as the nearby area was quite untidy with long grass and weeds. Litter was noted in various places throughout the village.

Waste Minimisation: Marks 6/20 Waste minimisation is distinct from litter control Plan and this might be addressed for 2009.

Tidiness: Marks 16/30 The adjudicator agrees with your wish to have cabling put under ground as it would make such a great difference to the village.

Residential Areas: Marks 25/40 The row of cottages opposite the School is delightful and the plants here add much to the overall presentation. Along St. Munchin's Terrace many properties were well presented and towards the top of Main Street the older cottages on the right were much admired. Good grass areas featured at Toormore and the houses between the Nursing Home and the Garda Station were really well presented.

Roads, Streets and Back Areas: Marks 30/50 Hedges should not be cut between March and August with the needs of wildlife in mind. The N20 approach is attractive with the surprise along the road when the view to the river opens up.

General Impression: Marks 8/10 It was a great pleasure for your adjudicator to visit Bruree for the first time and we wish you well with your plans for 2009.

GAA

Junior Football: In glorious sunshine at Martinstown on Wednesday night, Bruree’s Junior footballers had a comprehensive 2-9 to 0-8 victory over Knockainey in the South semi-final. Bruree held Knockainey to just a point in the first half, turning over with a 205 to 0-1 lead. A converted free from Stephen O’Halloran got Bruree off the mark early while Vincent Stanton and Michael Lane pushed home Bruree’s advantage with points from play. A converted forty five fro Stephen O’Halloran was followed by a goal from the same player after a one-two with Donal Deady. Paddy Kelly converted another Bruree free before Vincent Stanton found the Knockainey net late in the half. Bruree took the foot off the gas a little in the second half, adding just four points to their tally, one each from Vincent Stanton, John O’Brien, James C. O’Brien and Michael Lane. Knockainey added seven points to their total to leave the final score Bruree 2-9 Knockainey 0-8. The Bruree team was Charlie O’Shea, Andrew Sexton, Anthony O’Shea, Chris Sexton, Gerard O’Dea, Jimmy O’Dea, Dessie Lenihan, James C. O’Brien, Brendan Hogan, Michael Lane, John O’Brien, Paddy Kelly, Vincent Stanton, Stephen O’Halloran, Donal Deady, James V. O’Brien, Aidan Frawley, Eamon Sexton, Shane Mullane, Pat O’Shea.
