Bruree Golf Society
President's Prize: Last Saturday saw a large contingent of 44 golfers take to the splendid and tough, but very wet, course in Dundrum Golf Club, Co. Tipperary, to honour our President, Mr. Frankie Finn. With an early fourball out that morning due to a hurling match in the evening, up to date weather reports were received by text. With the course remaining just about open the 40 golfers teed off. The rain stopped, the clouds parted and the sun shone through for the majority of the afternoon. Even with the course playing tough, some great scores were returned.
The early bird certainly caught the worm, with Captain Seve bringing home a massive score of 45 points (minus 2). Next to come close was Mike Potter on 40 points (minus 2), the Master, Danny with 39 points (minus 3) and Ger Mullane on 37 points. Donna Finn was happy enough to beat main rival and brother in law, Ger Finn, whose confidence took a battering but, it has to be said he was gracious in defeat. With several prizes up for grabs alongside the main one, both members and guests on the day featured well. And the hidden agenda of Golfer of the Year was also still all to play for.
We then went back to The Central Bar, Bruree for the presentation of prizes and craic. A full house applauded the prize winners of the day as they accepted their wares from President Frankie, who in his address, thanked all for honouring him by playing for his prize, and also a huge shank you to his sponsors, without whom, the day would not have been such a success. Frankie also thanked his fellow officers and committee members for all their hard work and support to him throughout his year. The results of the day were as follows;
1st prize; Captain Mike Sexton (45 - 2 = 43 points), 2nd prize: Mike Potter (40 - 2 = 38 points), 3rd prize: Ger Mullane (37 points); Best Lady: Donna Finn (33 points)- Front nine: Danny Deady (20 points); Back nine: Kevin Cagney (20 points); Longest Drive (Men): Donal Deady, Men). Longest Drive (Ladies): Donna Finn, Nearest the Pin Hole 6: Tommy Allen, Hole 12: Jimmy Kavanagh (captain Charleville Golf Club), Best Beginner: Jim O’Connor,-Best Visitors: Davy O’Connor (42 points), Paul Allen (38 points). A great night was had by all to cap off a very successful year’s outings. Congratulations once again to President Frankie on his big day and best wishes on the remainder of your presidency.
Golfer of the Year: The underlying agenda in every outing came to a close this weekend with the last competitive outing of the year. The hunt for the title of Golfer of the Year was decided in a dramatic finale, with the winner taking home a double on the night. Our Society Captain, Mike Sexton, answered his critics when he secured both the Presidents Prize and the Golfer of the Year Award last Saturday. After what can only be described as a disastrous start to the year, he seemed to come back from the dead in the last few outings to secure top position leaving Mike Potter, John Carey and Danny Deady close, but not close enough. This award was once again very generously sponsored by Seamus Fitzgerald. We extend our thanks to Seamus for his continued support to our society and well done to Mike on his double.
Best Wishes: Congratulations to Brendan Griffin and his charges on winning the first ever Fred Daly Pennant for Charleville Golf Club recently.
