The collection for the parish clerks in Rockhill and Bruree will both be held this coming weekend, September 6/7. Your generosity to both parish clerks would, as usual, be greatly appreciated.

GAA
Junior Hurlers Advance: Our Junior hurlers had to dig deep to secure victory over Garryspillane at Bruff in last Sunday evening’s South semi-final. Bruree led by the minimum at the break on a 0-7 to 1-3 scoreline. An opening minute goal signalled Garryspillane’s intentions very early on. Donal Deady provided five of Bruree’s points, four from frees and was very unlucky not to find the net. David O’Dea and Conor O’Brien both pointed from play for Bruree in the opening half. Though Garryspillane only added two points to their tally during the second half hour, Bruree found it difficult to open up a good lead. Conor O’Brien had an early point from play for Bruree but Garryspillane cancelled this out quickly. Bruree’s defence had to be on their toes to hold off a determined Bouncers side through the half. Two pointed frees fro Donal Deady were answered by a pointed free from Garryspillane but Bruree were holding their heads and playing some fine, wholehearted hurling. Conor O’Brien from play and Donal Deady from a free put a safer four points between the sides entering the closing ten minutes of the game. An injury time goal from Mike Sexton put the icing on the cake to leave the final score 1-12 to 1-5. Bruree: Eamon Sexton, Patrick Deady, Anthony O’Shea, John Deady, Vincent Stanton, Paul Fitzgerald, Morgan Lyons, Chris Sexton, Conor O’Brien, Brian O’Rourke, David O’Dea, John Lynch, Donal Deady, Mike Sexton, Declan Sexton, Michael Brouder, Mark Noonan, Michael Cotter, Niall Broderick, Sean Deane, Laurence Sexton, Joachim O’Kelly, John O’Halloran, Michael Mullane, Aidan Frawley, David Barron.
D-Day: Sunday, September 14 is D-Day - as in Dromin/Athlacca Day - as our Senior hurlers play our next door neighbours for the privilege of staying up in the senior grades next year. The game is fixed for Bruff at 1.45 pm and given our recent form, one has to worry about our prospects of taking a victory. Fifteen or more players will have to stand up and be counted on the day in a game which could define Bruree hurling for years to come.
Marathon: Martin O’Brien will walk this year’s Dublin City Marathon on October 27 to raise funds for Bruree Juvenile GAA Club. Sponsorship cards are available from the club and we hope that you will be as generous as possible in your sponsorship of Martin.
Boxing
Congratulations to the Irish boxers who did so well in the Olympic games at Beijing. For three competitors out of just five to come home with medals is surely a great achievement. Special congratulations to our own Jim Walsh who was the manager of the Irish boxing team. After a lifetime in the sport, he must surely be very proud to be part of such a great and successful sporting occasion.
Belfast
Anyone interested in travelling to Belfast around December 8 are asked to contact Lily O’Kelly at 063-90876. The proposed trip would include a two night stayover and is dependent on enough people interested in travelling.
Vandalism
It is disappointing to see that Bruree has been the victim of vandalism. The church in the old graveyard at Bruree has been defaced with graffiti. It is a shame that the sacred places in our parish are not safe and that these mindless people have no respect for the memory of those who are buried there. If anyone has any information about the perpetrators of this act of disrespect, they should communicate this to the relevant authorities immediately. Hopefully this is an isolated incident and that we will not see any more occurrences of this behaviour.
