BRUREE NOTES 25/1/2009

GAA

Retirement: A large crowd gathered at the Central Bar recently to celebrate the seventeen years Noel Brosnan had served as treasurer of Bruree GAA. Noel, christened “the bearded legend”, retired at the AGM back in December and the night was organised to pay tribute to the immense amount of work Noel had put in for the club. The good news is that Noel will continue to work for the club in his new position as Scor co-ordinator. Thanks for everything Noel!

Membership: All members are reminded that their membership fee is now overdue. This is €10 for adults and €2 for juvenile members. The club will be stricter than ever on the payment of membership this year so please co-operate by paying yours immediately.

Oral History: The GAA Oral History Project aims to record the fullest possible picture of what the GAA has meant to the Irish people, in their own words. A questionnaire has been designed to gather as much information as possible and this questionnaire will be preserved as a permanent resource on the history of the GAA and Irish society. This document will be accessible to the public, with the exception of your contact details. Among the topics covered in the questionnaire are the respondent’s memories of the GAA, their own and their family’s involvement in the association and the affect of that involvement in their life. It also addresses the changes which have happened in the GAA and the role, involvement and influences of the Church, politics, the Irish language, women, and volunteers in the GAA. Anyone interested in participating in this collecting of the oral history of the GAA can contact Elaine Horgan or John Harrold to obtain a copy of the questionnaire.

Fixture: Bruree’s Junior hurling county champions Munster semi-final against Lisgoold at Newtown on last Sunday, January 25th, was postponed.

Social: The Bruree GAA Victory Social will be held at Bulgaden Castle on Saturday, February 7th. The meal will be served at 9.00 pm sharp. Music will be provided by Terminal 11 and we hope that everyone will make the effort to attend to celebrate a successful year for the club. Tickets at just €30 each are available from local businesses and members of the committee. The social committee will need to know numbers for catering so please purchase your tickets by this weekend. Your co-operation would be appreciated

Three In A Row: At our Annual GAA social on Saturday, 7th February, we plan to celebrate the achievements of the Bruree Senior team in winning three in a row South Senior hurling titles in 1976/77/78. We hope that all panel members or a representative will make a special effort to attend. Presentations will be made to the panel members on the night. Tickets are €30 and are available from any member of the Bruree GAA Committee.

All Stars: The South All Stars banquet will be held at Bulgaden Castle on this Saturday, January 31st. James V. O’Brien, Paul Fitzgerald and Jim O’Brien will all receive awards on the night. Hopefully, some Bruree people will travel on the night to support our representatives. Tickets at €30 each are available from Elaine Horgan or at the door on the night.

Season Tickets: The GAA are offering a deal on season tickets for upcoming league games which will also give those who avail of the offer the opportunity to purchase All Ireland tickets should their county get through to the final. Details are available at www.seasonticket.gaa.ie.

Indoor Hurling: This year’s competition will start on Monday, February 9th, and will finish on Thursday, March 12th. It will run every Monday for Under 10s and 8s and Thursday night for Under 12s between these dates. We ask that all players please attend only the nights that they are playing. Full details will be issued to parents through the School. This Competition is only open to children attending National Schools only. Anyone from the parish who has a child attending a National School outside the parish and would like to attend, a membership form is available from any member of Bruree GAA Club.

Summer Camp: Any one deciding to attend the Summer coaching week this year, it will be on from Monday, June 29th, to Friday July 3rd.

FIRST DAIL

The 90th anniversary of the first Dail was celebrated last week. The Dail was convened on January 21st, 1919 and Bruree had two representatives elected to it. Both Eamon de Valera and Dr. Richard Hayes were members of the first Dail but both were absent on the day, being “fé ghlas ag Gallaibh” - locked up by the foreigner i.e. in prison in England. Richard Hayes represented Limerick East while Eamon de Valera was elected by two constituencies - East Mayo and East Clare. Bruree had a third connection with the second Dail in that Eamon Roche was elected along with de Valera and Hayes. Eamon was a Tipperary man who had been manager of Bruree Co-operative Creamery for a while and was elected for the constituency of Kerry-West Limerick.

Lucky dip winners in last week’s Bruree GAA/Rockhill Rovers lotto draw were €50 Sandra O’Halloran €25 Pat Harvey, Rosaleen O’Donnell €20 Liam Quain, Charleville, Eamon Sexton, Molly O’Sullivan, Charleville.
