BRUREE NOTES 15/2/2009

GAA

Munster Final: Bruree survived to fight another day in last Sunday’s Munster Junior B Hurling final at Raheenagh - just! On a perfect day for hurling, we were treated to the original game of two halves as Bruree dominated the much of the first half and struggled to make a mark in the second. During the opening half hour, Bruree looked to have the measure of the Tipperary opposition from Moyne-Templetuohy. Exchanges were tight and close but Bruree had the edge, an edge which showed on the scoreboard with Bruree enjoying a deserved three point interval lead. Ground conditions militated against first time hurling and first touches on both sides were a little suspect. It was Moyne-Templetuohy who got off the mars first with two points in the opening minutes, one from a free. Donal Deady then got Bruree on the scoreboard with two pointed frees either side of a Moyne-Templetuohy pointed free. We had a hectic couple of minutes midway through the half which started with a Morgan Lyons free. This was sent to David Hogan who found Declan Sexton in position to try for a goal which he duly scored. From the puckout, the sliothar came down to the Bruree goalmouth where Eamon Sexton was called on the make a great save. Moyne-Templetuohy were awarded a free in the follow up and converted this to make the score 1-2 to 0-4 in Bruree’s favour. It was score for score for the remainder of the half with Donal Deady providing three Bruree points, two from frees. Morgan Lyons added another Bruree point from play while Moyne-Templetuohy added two points to leave the interval score Bruree 1-7 Moyne-Templetuohy0-6. Bruree had a couple of chances to extend their lead towards the end of the half but failed to do so.
Bruree supporters looked to the second half with great hope but instead were treated to a nail-biting finish as Bruree snatched a draw from the jaws of certain defeat. Moyne-Templetuohy had two early points to close the gap to the minimum in the opening minutes. Donal Deady had two Bruree points from play in the fifth minute which would prove to be Bruree’s only scores of the half until injury time. In the meantime, Moyne-Templetuohy whittled away at Bruree’s lead and went into a three point lead. Bruree looked dead in the water and unable to get back in the game, try as they might. As we approached injury time, all looked lost. But Bruree kept trying and three pointed frees in (a very long!) injury time saw them draw level. Two points from Donal Deady and one from Morgan Lyons, all from placed balls left the final score Bruree 1-11 Moyne-Templetuohy 0-14. Bruree left Raheenagh breathing a sigh of relief and by far the happier of the two teams. We will be looking for a full hours hurling from Bruree the next day out as they seem to have the measure of the Tipperary champions, going on the first half performance last Sunday. The replay is fixed for the same venue on Sunday March 8th.
