Social: The Bruree GAA Victory Social was held at Bulgaden Castle on last Saturday night and attracted a big crowd to celebrate another great year for the club. Club chairman, Noel O’Halloran, welcomed everyone and thanked everyone who had been involved with the club in any capacity during 2008 for their support. He congratulated the club’s junior hurlers on their successful year and wished them the best of luck in the Munster final. Noel praised their hard work and persistence. He also congratulated the senior hurlers on winning the South championship and wished them the best of luck for 2009 with the return of John Tuohy as trainer. Noel reminded them of what Brian Cody had said at our 2006 social - “Do not look back with regret”. He thanked all those who had joined the Mackey Stand draw and reminded them that the club was again promoting the draw as their main fundraiser for the coming year. Fr. Desmond McAuliffe wished the club well for 2009 and congratulated the club on a busy and successful year.
Stephen McDonogh and James V. O’Brien then presented the junior panel with their South and County league and Championship medals while Noel O’Halloran presented the seniors with their South Championship medals. David Hogan, junior captain, made presentations to the team mentors, Paul Sexton, Seamus Sexton, Andrew Sexton and John O’Brien. One of the happiest people on the night was young Stephen Sexton who was presented with a signed jersey by the junior team for his loyalty and support to the team. Fr. McAuliffe then made presentations to the members of the Bruree senior panel which had won three in a row of South Senior hurling titles in 1976/1977 and 1978. It was great to see such a great turnout and special thanks was offered to those who had made long journeys to be there on the night. The panel members were Mike O’Brien, Donal Mullane, Jim O’Brien, Johnny Wall, John Moloney, Gerard Mullane, John Potter, Gerard Moloney, Kevin Murphy, Pat Boyce, Pat O’Brien, Hugh Hogan, Henry Simcox, Patsy Ryan, Johnny Fitzgerald, Eamon O’Dea, Pat Potter, Mike Barron, Larry Moloney, Mike Moloney, Pa Wall, Timmy O’Shea, Joe Morrissey, Mike Lyons, John Lyons, Sean Simcox, Noel Brosnan, Frank McDonogh, Mike Mullane, Sean Lyons, Sean Deady, Mike Sexton, Danny Deady, James O’Dea, Paschal O’Dea, Neilus Simcox, Noel Howard, Pat Collopy, Eamon McGrath, Jerry Horgan, Joe O’Riordan. A moments silence was observed as a mark of respect to those members of the panel and team mentors who have passed to their eternal reward.
The annual club awards were then presented. The 2008 Hurler of the Year was presented by Club Life President Ann Potter to Eamon Sexton who occupies a pivotal role on the field of play. It is a role he has played for a number of years and he has combined a natural talent with a confidence which has seen him keep Bruree in contention in tight games. He marshals those around him to ensure a tough defence for our Junior B Hurling which won this year’s county title and is on course for a Munster title. His penalty save in the Munster semi-final confirmed his choice as Hurler of the Year.
The 2008 Footballer of the Year was presented by Club Life President Ann Potter to Anthony O’Shea who is a defender with great physical strength and a great presence on the field of play. A good catcher of the high ball, our award winner is capable of good, intelligent, relieving clearances, taking pressure off his fellow defenders and setting up attacks for the forwards. Anthony a formidable obstacle to opposing attackers and not many pass him.
The 2008 Hall of Fame was presented by Club Life President Ann Potter to Pat O’Brien who was one of Bruree’s legendary hurling forwards. He was an important part of Bruree’s 1966 county title winning junior hurling team. He went on to play in two county senior hurling finals with Bruree, in 1978 and 1982. Noted as a stylish hurler with the ability to pick off scores from all angles, our Hall of Fame recipient was one of our most prolific scoring forwards and rarely played a game without getting on the scoreboard. Pat was a prominent member of the three in a row South championship winning Bruree team and his sons continue a fine tradition in Bruree hurling.
Maura McMahon presented the Donncha O hArgain Perpetual Cup to the 2008 Sports Personality of the Year, Noel O’Halloran, who is currently in his fourth year as chairman of Bruree GAA. Noel has contributed greatly to gaelic games in Bruree for a long number of years both as an administrator and in team management. He has helped Bruree reach new heights in recent years and will always have the distinction of leading the club to its first county senior hurling title. He takes his responsibility within the club very seriously and strives to project a positive image of the club both within the parish and outside.
The final presentation of the night was made by Elaine Horgan to our former treasurer Noel Brosnan and his wife Bernie. Noel retired as treasurer of the club at the 2008 AGM, having spent seventeen years in that position and ensured that our finances were always in a healthy state.
Membership: All members are reminded that their membership fee is now overdue. This is €10 for adults and €2 for juvenile members. The club will be stricter than ever on the payment of membership this year so please co-operate by paying yours immediately.
Oral History: The GAA Oral History Project aims to record the fullest possible picture of what the GAA has meant to the Irish people, in their own words. A questionnaire has been designed to gather as much information as possible and this questionnaire will be preserved as a permanent resource on the history of the GAA and Irish society. Anyone interested in participating in this collecting of the oral history of the GAA can contact Elaine Horgan or John Harrold to obtain a copy of the questionnaire.
Fixture: Bruree’s Junior hurlers are down to play the Munster final this Sunday, February 15th, at Raheenagh at 2.30 pm.
