County Championship: Bruree’s senior hurlers travelled to Hospital on Friday evening to play Ahane in the first round of the county senior hurling championship. Bruree gave a great performance and were unlucky not to take victory on the night. Happiness tinged with just a little disappointment was the mood of Bruree supporters on the way home. Happy with a Bruree performance on a par with the 2006 county final game, disappointment that we did not claim a victory which was there for the taking. Bruree played into a stiff wind for the opening half and trailed by the minimum at the break. Bruree were playing well as a team with a storming defence delivering good ball into the forwards. Unfortunately, nerves seemed to get the better of our forwards and they did not capitalise on all the scoring opportunities which came their way. Points from play from Donal Deady, Stephen O’Halloran and Tommy O’Brien and one converted free from Donal Deady saw the half time score Bruree 0-4 Ahane 0-5 with all Ahane’s scores coming from placed balls. Bruree’s resolve was severely tested in the opening minutes of the second half when Ahane stretched their lead to three points with a point from play and one each from a sideline cut and from a free to a pointed free from Donal Deady. Another pointed free from Donal Deady and one from play from James C. O’Brien steadied the ship midway through the half. Points from play from Brian O’Rourke and Michael Lane gave Bruree a slender lead with ten minutes to go. Three minutes later disaster struck when Ahane found the Bruree net from a twenty metre free. However, Bruree held their heads and a pointed free from Donal Deady was just the reply Bruree needed. Another pointed Ahane free put them two ahead again but Donal Deady stepped up again to convert two frees to draw the game. Bruree had a couple of goal chances in both halves and these will have to be taken in future if Bruree is to progress. However, this was a great performance from one to fifteen and beyond and will work wonders for morale in the team and the club. Hopefully, we can look forward to a long championship campaign this year. The Bruree team was Daniel Lane, Kieran O’Rourke, John O’Brien, Andrew Sexton, Dessie Lenihan, Stephen McDonogh, Shane Mullane, James V. O’Brien, James C. O’Brien, Tommy O’Brien, Jimmy O’Dea, Michael Lane, Donal Deady, Stephen O’Halloran, Brian O’Rourke, Eamon Sexton, Gerard O’Brien, Gerard O’Dea, David Hogan, Brendan Hogan, Paddy Kelly, Morgan Lyons, John Paul Murphy.

Golf Classic: A fundraising Golf Classic will be held at Charleville Golf Club on Friday, July 17th. Our adult club presently has teams in senior hurling league and championship, junior “A” hurling and football and Under 21 hurling and football. Our underage players are the future of Bruree GAA and the membership of our juvenile club has never been higher - 98 members are currently registered. We strive to provide regular training and matches to cater from Under 8 to Under 16 level.

We are aware that, in the present economic climate, serious consideration has to be given to the level of support provided to organizations like ourselves. To enable everyone who wants to support the Bruree GAA Golf Classic this year to do so, we have reduced the team entry fee to €100 (team of 3) and tee sponsorship to €50. We trust that you will agree that this represents excellent value and we look forward to your continued support.

If you have any queries please contact Chairman Noel O’Halloran on 087 7512396. For team bookings contact John Carey at 087-2701771.

SYMPATHY

We extend our sincere sympathy to the family, relatives and friends of Peggy O'Brien, England and late of Clogher, and Peggy Dolan, Ballyagran, who died recently.

GAA SUMMER COACHING WEEK

It has long been insisted that players represent the most important constituent in any GAA club. They are our key resource, and give so much enjoyment to so many people year after year. As a result, our club coaches have a most important job to perform in ensuring that the youth continue to play and enjoy our games, and that all of our players continue to develop as athletes. With this in mind, early this summer Brù Rì Juvenile Club is holding a coaching week for both hurling and football between June 29th and July 3rd, 2009. This week of coaching is available for all children in the parish from 7 years to 14 years (It is important to note that the minimum age is 7 years old, as only children of 7 years and over can be affiliated to the club for insurance purposes). All basic skills in hurling and football will be demonstrated/coached so any “new” players will be especially welcome. Monday to Thursday, coaching will be from 11.00 am to 2.00 pm. Children should bring lunch and drink daily and remember to bring your hurley and helmet daily. At the end of the week, on Friday 3rd, there will be a wide range of fun events in the field for all participants in the coaching week. This will run from 6-9pm weather permitting. If we are unable to run events in the field, we will reconvene in the school hall from 6.00pm- 7.30pm. Sports gear and a certificate of attendance will be presented. For anyone that has any queries please do not hesitate to contact Mike Mullane, Mike Lyons or Gerard Sexton.

Total cost for this great week is €30 per child, for families of 3 children or more it will cost €80 and is due by Friday, 12th June, at the latest.

Lucky dip winners in last week’s Bruree GAA/Rockhill Lotto draw were €50 Ashling Fitzgerald €25 Joe Carroll, Aaron and Brian c/o Tom Cotter €20 Susan and Sandra Hayes, Tom Curran, Ballyagran, Teresa Mortell, Kilmallock.
