Bruree Notes 5/7/2009

Sunflowers
In the recent sunflower collection in aid of Milford Hospice, a total of €301 was collected in the boxes left in the shops in Bruree and Athlacca. Thanks to everyone who supported the fundraising effort.
School
At Bruree National School last week, Eileen O’Connell and Gabrielle Gubbins made a presentation of equipment to the school. The equipment, which included computers, gym equipment, musical instruments, heaters and yard markings, were purchased with the proceeds of a table quiz organised by Eileen and Gabrielle at the Central Bar. On hand to accept the presentation were principal Jimmy Woulfe and pupils Laura Murphy, Christopher Kelleher and Alanah Sheedy. The organisers of the table quiz would like to thank the Deadys, Frankie Finn and the ticket sellers for their help on the night of the quiz as well as Karen and Eamon for the use of their premises.
GAA
Junior Hurling: Our Junior A hurlers played Feoghanagh/Castlemahon at Bruree on Tuesday night. After a good first half, Bruree ran out of steam during the second half to lose by four points in the end. The first half belonged to Bruree who rattled over some excellent scores to lead by 1-6 to 0-4 at the break. Two early scores from frees, a goal and a point, from Charlie O’Shea set the trend for the opening half. Declan Sexton, Charlie O’Shea, Michael Mullane and John Lynch all had points from play while Gerard O’Dea converted a free. The second half saw most of the scores, a total of fourteen points with eleven from play, come from the visitors. Bruree could manage just four points, one each from play from Mike Sexton and Michael Mullane and two converted frees from Charlie O’Shea. This left the final score Bruree 1-10 Feoghanagh/Castlemahon 0-18. The Bruree team was Eamon Sexton, John O’Halloran, Anthony O’Shea, Chris Sexton, Patrick Deady, Paul Fitzgerald, Gerard O’Dea, John Lynch, Declan Sexton, David Hogan, Charlie O’Shea, Michael Mullane, Mike Sexton, Sean Deane, Niall Broderick, David Deady, Michael Cotter, Michael O’Brien Laurence Sexton, Peter Cussen.
Senior Hurling: Our seniors travelled to Croom on Tuesday evening to take on the locals in the All County League. After a disastrous opening quarter, Bruree made a great effort to lose by just two points. The half time score was Bruree 1-8 Croom 1-11 with the score at the final whistle Bruree 2-17 Croom 3-16. Scores came from Stephen O’Halloran 1-7, Gerard O’Brien 1-3, Tommy O’Brien 0-3, Shane Mullane 0-2, Paddy Kelly 0-1 and Donal Deady 0-1.
Golf Classic: A fundraising Golf Classic will be held at Charleville Golf Club on Friday, July 17th. A very attractive first prize of All Ireland Final tickets plus overnight accommodation makes this the classic to be part of. Our adult club presently has teams in senior hurling league and championship, junior “A” hurling and football and Under 21 hurling and football. Our underage players are the future of Bruree GAA and the membership of our juvenile club has never been higher - 98 members are currently registered. We strive to provide regular training and matches to cater from Under 8 to Under 16 level. We are aware that, in the present economic climate, serious consideration has to be given to the level of support provided to organizations like ourselves. To enable everyone who wants to support the Bruree GAA Golf Classic this year to do so, we have reduced the team entry fee to €100 (team of 3) and tee sponsorship to €50. We trust that you will agree that this represents excellent value and we look forward to your continued support. If you have any queries please contact Chairman Noel O’Halloran on 087 7512396. For team bookings contact John Carey at 087-2701771.
Community Radio
There are two more draws still to go in the Ballyhoura Community Radio members draw with membership at just €10 per draw (€20 for both draws). The next draw will be held on Sunday night next. You can join with John Harrold or any member of BCR. The second draw will be held on at the end of June. Your support would be greatly appreciated for your radio station. Ballyhoura Community Radio is now broadcasting on the internet on Friday, Saturday and Sundays from 5.00 to 9.00 pm. Just go to www.bcradio.ie and click on the Listen Live link. Requests may be sent to studio@bcradio.ie. BCR is a community station run by volunteers. Much of the finances to run the station must come from fundraising.
Sympathy
We extend our sincere sympathy to the family, relatives and friends of Julia Doherty, Mallow, and Denis Scully, Croom, who died recently.

Coaching Week
Last week, over eighty children spent the week at the sportsfield for the Bruree GAA Summer Coaching week. Members of the club took time out to coach the future stars of Bruree GAA. The week finished with a fun evening and the presentation of attendance certificates. There was great demand for the Bucking Bull, the Gladiators and Sumo Wrestling. Thanks to everyone who was involved in making the week such a success.
