GAA

Championship Win: Bruree’s senior hurlers secured a very important victory in the championship at Bruff on Friday night. Bruree has needed his victory as a moral booster and will hopefully go into this week’s game with restored confidence.

Because of a clash of colours both teams changed strip with Bruree playing in the red and black of Meelick. There must have been memories of 2006 as Croom lined out in the Patrickswell colours. Bruree came into Friday’s game as underdogs and in truth, the game could have gone either way. There were many missed chances on both sides throughout the hour. However, Bruree battled to the final whistle and held on for the narrowest of victories. This was a low scoring game with the final tally being just 0-8 to 0-7 with the sides level at the break at 0-4 each. All bar one of these eight points came from play with Michael Lane providing three from play for Bruree and James V. O’Brien chipping in with one from play with ten minutes of the half to go. Bruree missed chances for a hatful of scores during the half and this has to be a worry for future games. Scores were as hard to come by in the second half with Croom converting three frees to make up their final tally. Paddy Kelly converted two frees for Bruree after both Tommy O’Brien and James V. O’Brien had notched up a point apiece from play. The Bruree team was Eamon Sexton, Kieran O’Rourke, John O’Brien, Vincent Stanton, Jimmy O’Dea, Gerard O’Brien, Shane Mullane, Dessie Lenihan, Brian O’Rourke, James V. O’Brien, Gerard O’Dea, Tommy O’Brien, Donal Deady, Michael Lane, Paddy Kelly, Brendan Hogan, Partick Deady, John Deady, John Paul Murphy, Anthony O’Shea, Stephen O’Halloran, Andrew Sexton, Morgan Lyons, Michael Shinney.

Next up for Bruree is another local derby with a date with Granagh/Ballingarry in Ballyagran on Friday night at 7.30 pm.

Junior A League: Bruree were out of their depth when they took on Effin at Bruree on Friday night. Bruree trailed by 0-3 to 2-6 at half time with Bruree’s points coming from Declan Sexton, Brendan Hogan and Patrick Deady. Second half goals from Shane Finucane and Michael Mullane added some respectability to the final scoreline. Points from Patrick Deady and Michael Shinney left the final score Bruree 2-5 Effin 5-10. The Bruree team was Daniel Lane, John Deady, Anthony O’Shea, Morgan Lyons, Michael Shinney, Paul Fitzgerald, Chris Sexton, John Lynch, Brendan Hogan, Michael Mullane, Patrick Deady, Declan Sexton, Michael Cotter, Shane Finucane, David Broderick, Mark Noonan.
