School Hurling League:
Bruree took on Hospital on Friday last in a playoff for a place in the South schools final. Bruree started well in the first half with points converted by Brian McCarthy, Cathal Barrington and Sean Quirke in the first fifteen minutes. At half time Bruree led by 0-4 to 0-0 and had narrowly missed two goal chances from the full forward line of Ciaran Sexton, Shane Hannon and Cathal Barrington. Bruree continued to put on the pressure in the second half when playing into the wind and up a slight hill. Points came from Tommy Cronnolly and Sean Quirke while Sam Cronnolly made a few good clearances from his goal line. Hospital replied with some attacks and they were unlucky to narrowly miss a couple of point chances. With just five minutes to go Bruree were again on the attack and left corner forward Ciaran Sexton pulled on a low ball to send it into the full forward line where Shane Hannon picked it up and sent it to the Hospital net for Bruree’s only goal. Hospital’s pressure eventually paid off with two goals to leave the final score Bruree 1-7 Hospital 2-0.
Bruree met Knocklong in the final at Bruff on Friday last. This was a closely fought game with little between the sides although Knocklong had a much bigger side physically than Bruree. Bruree’s defence played a blinder with Brian Sexton at full back and Sam Cronnolly in goals leading by example. Knocklong were first to score with a point from play. Sam Cronnolly brought off a couple of great saves and Brian Sexton came to the rescue with a clearance from the goal line. A Sean Quirke point from a free saw the teams level at half time. Shortly after the resumption the Knocklong goalkeeper brought off a great save from Shane Hannon. A sixty five from Tommy Cronnolly was sent short to Sean Quirke who sent it over the bar to give Bruree a slender lead. However disaster struck with about seven minutes to go when an unlucky bounce beat an otherwise excellent Sam Cronnolly and barely trickled to the net. This left the final score Bruree 0- Knocklong 1-1
The Bruree team was Sam Cronnolly, Ciara Daly, Brian Sexton, David O’Connell, Edward Moore, Darragh O’Driscoll, Owen Carey, Tommy Cronnolly, Gearoid McCarthy, Jack Murphy, Sean Quirke, Brian McCarthy, Ciaran Sexton, Shane Hannon, Cathal Barrington, Jimmy Leslie Madigan, Jonathan Fitzpatrick, Ciara Mullane, Harry Mullane, Finbarr Fitzpatrick, Christopher Kelleher, Cian O’Grady.
