BRUREE NOTES 12/5/2013

CANCER COLLECTION:

The church gate collection for cancer will take place at masses this weekend, Saturday, May 18th, and Sunday, May 19th. Your generosity would be greatly appreciated.

HAVE YOU OLD PHOTOS?:

As part of the parishes celebration of The Gathering 2013, one of the events planned is an exhibition of old photos from the parish or with parish connections. The organisers will be at Bruree School on Thursday, May 16th from 7.00 to 9.00 pm to scan photos, take details and return the originals. This process does not damage the original photograph in any way. Contact John Harrold or Brendan Hogan for further details or if you have a lot of photos you would like to have scanned. Anyone away from home may email photos to brendan.hogan@emc.com.

TIDY TOWNS TABLE QUIZ:

The new Bruree Tidy Towns committee, which, at present, consists of 7 members (Pat Murphy, Treacy Smith, Dermot Kelly, Mildred O’Dea Neil Kingston, Jim Greene, Mary Daly), would like to invite everyone to their table quiz on this Friday, May 17th, at the Central Bar, Bruree, starting at 8.30 pm. Entry is just €5 per person. Of course there will be grub, spot prizes, a prize for the winners and good crack. Cheating is only allowed if you don’t get caught!
We would also like to thank Xpress Stop petrol station and Cahill’s for their sponsorship in getting us started.

RAMBLING HOUSE:

Look out for the next traditional Irish rambling house on Friday, June 14th in Bruree Community Centre.

COMMUNITY HALL:

Spring Clean! We are holding a clothing recycle drive in aid of the Community Hall on today, Thursday, May 16th. If you have any unwanted clothes, bed linen, towels and textiles including shoes, bags, belts and soft toys, please bring them to the hall any week day morning or give to a committee member (086 0855544).  We can also take books but not school books (text or copy) nor can we accept magazines or diaries. Please ensure that all donations are bagged. All funds raised will be used to continue the renovation of the hall for community activities. Thank you.

GAA:

Senior Championship: There was much shaking of Bruree heads as supporters left Bruff on Friday night after the defeat to Knockainey in the first round of the county senior hurling championship. Shaking heads in disbelief at the defeat but more so at the depth of the defeat. Bruree held sway in very few positions as Knockainey looked sharp and motivated. Bruree had a great early point from play from Dessie Lenihan but this was quickly cancelled out by Knockainey. As both sides tried to settle into the game, a tsuule for a ball twenty metres out from the Bruree goal ended with a ground pull to the back of the Bruree net, a score which Eamon Sexton could do nothing about. This was a crucial score and Knockainey would lead for the rest of the hour. The sides exchanged sores for the remainder of the opening half with Bruree’s coming from Kieran O’Dea (0-2, 0-1 free), Shaun Riordan and Michael Lane. Knockainey got off to a flying start in the second half with three straight points from play without reply. Then followed what was probably Bruree’s best spell but they had problems converting possession to scores. Kieran converted three frees - in fact Bruree would have to rely on frees for all their second half scores. A second Knockainey goal coming up to the final ten minutes of the game effectively put the contest beyond Bruree’s reach. Pointed frees from Shane Mullane (0-2) and Kieran O’Dea completed Bruree’s tally to leave the final score Knockainey 2-13 Bruree 0-11. The Bruree panel was Eamon Sexton, Kieran O’Rourke, John O’Brien, John Paul Murphy, Patrick Deady, Gerard O’Brien, Vincent Stanton, Shane Mullane, Dessie Lenihan, Stephen O’Halloran, Shaun Riordan, Gerard O’Dea, Kieran O’Dea, James V. O’Brien, Michael Lane, Paddy Kelly, David Hogan, Brendan Hogan, Declan Sexton, Jack Potter, Donal Deady, Michael Brouder, Ronan O’Halloran.

CAR BOOT SALE:

The next car boot sale in aid of the Rockhill Bruree Sportsfield Development Committee will be held on Saturday, May 25th

JUVENILE GAA NOTES:

Under 8 Hurling: An U8 Hurling blitz was held in Bruree Sportsfield. Three clubs were invited but Granagh/Ballingarry sent their apologies for being unable to attend. Because of the large number of players from both Pallasgreen and Bruree was decided to make two teams from each club. Both Bruree teams played brilliantly and won both games, doing the Bruree GAA Club very proud.
Some great talent coming up the ranks and it’s a pleasure to watch our Under 8s competing at such high levels and showing some great skills at this early stage of their young careers. Well done to all the Under 8 players and management.

ROCKHILL ROVERS:

Rockhill played their final home game against Adare and only a win would do to give them for a chance of promotion. Rockhill took a 2 nil lead before half time with Tom Shea scoring the first, before Kieran O’Rourke doubled the lead. The second half went the same as the first where Rockhill dominated and scored a further 2 goals through Kieran O’Dea and James O’Brien. A great win for Rockhill which put them level on points with Kildimo and Athea with one game to go. This weekend it was away to Kildimo and Rockhill secured the desired result with a 1-0 victory to ensure premier division football next season.  The crucial goal came from Donal Deady. Well done Rockhill! All that’s left now is the championship play off next Sunday against Athea in Clounreask
