BRUREE NOTES 2/11/2008

GAA

Junior Football: Our junior footballers travelled to the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday to play Mountcollins in the county semi-final. While Bruree were outplayed by the westerners, this was a game which they could have won. The final score was Bruree 0-6 Mountcollins 0-9 with each side scoring just four points from play. Some early frees given away by Bruree were to turn out expensive at the final whistle. Bruree had registered just one point by half time, from the boot of Michael Lane, while Mountcollins had five on the board, four from frees. Bruree also had one effort from Stephen O’Halloran come back off the upright while, at the other end, Pat O’Shea brought off a great save from a penalty. We saw a more committed performance from Bruree in the second half and they clawed themselves back to within two points of the opposition. A rocket of a shot which came back off the crossbar might have made the difference. Points from play from Michael Lane (2) and Tommy O’Brien and one each from frees from Stephen O’Halloran and Gerard O’Dea left the final score 0-9 to 0-6 in Mountcollins’ favour. The Bruree panel was Pat O’Shea, Dessie Lenihan, Anthony O’Shea, Chris Sexton, Jimmy O’Dea, Andrew Sexton, James V. O’Brien, Charlie O’Shea, John O’Brien, Michael Lane, Stephen O’Halloran, Paddy Kelly, Vincent Stanton, Gerard O’Dea, Donal Deady, Aidan Frawley, Tommy O’Brien, Eamon Sexton, Shane Mullane, Gerard O’Brien, Brendan Hogan, Paul Sexton, James C. O’Brien, Kieran O’Rourke, Brian O’Rourke.

Junior Hurling: Our Junior hurlers were a little below par on Saturday when playing Doon in the county semi-final at Claughaun. However, they did enough to earn a replay, with the game finishing on a 1-9 each scoreline. Bruree’s goal was a well taken effort from Brian O’Rourke.

Players Development Fund: Bruree GAA is holding its Player Development Fund annual draw again this year. The 2008 draw is bigger and better than ever with €1,000 in cash as a first prize in each of four weekly draws. There will also be one prize of €200 and three of €100 for each draw. MARY MCSHERRY WARD

Mary McSherry Ward died peacefully at her home in Bloomfield Hills on October 13, 2008, at the age of 90. Mary McSherry came to Bruree in 1975 from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, to find out all she could about Eamon de Valera. She was researching a book on Dev and made lots of friend as a result. Mannix Joyce was a great adviser and she got to meet the de Valera family in Dublin. She visited yearly up to the last 2 years. She suffered from migraine and visited the late Dr. Quane and his uniqueness interested her. She returned to the States every year with a wardrobe beautifully crafted by Mr. Fraser in Hospital. During her summers here she had various adventures. From 1980-1990 she walked the length of the Republic of Ireland. She walked from Mizen to Malin with the help of a driver to bring her luggage. In later years, she decided that she would row from the East coast of Ireland to the Atlantic. She started in Ringsend in Dublin and from the Liffey to the Grand Canal and on to the Shannon and finished in Ardnacrusha. Quite a feat for a lady advanced in years.

Mary was a respected writer and wrote both fiction and non-fiction which was published in a wide range of periodicals, including The National Review, Time magazine and Ladies Home Journal. A lot of her time in Ireland was spent in Baltimore where she had a house, but Bruree was her anchor in between. I’m sure her many friends here will be sad to hear of her death.

SYMPATHY

We extend our sincere sympathy to the family, relatives and friends of Dr. Patrick Fuller, Killarney, and Sean Pitman, Ballyhea, who died recently.
