Bruree Notes 3/8/2009

GAA

Senior Hurling: Our senior hurlers will be disappointed with the result of their second round championship game against Murroe/Boher at Claughaun on Friday night. However, they will be more disappointed with their own performance on the night with few players performing anywhere near their potential. The weather conditions left a lot to be desired but this the same for both sides. Bruree’s marking was at sixes and sevens in the opening minutes of the game and this led to an early Murroe/Boher goal. This seemed to wake Bruree up a little and four well taken points from play put Bruree into a slender lead. Tommy O’Brien was first to find the range and this was followed by two from Gerard O’Brien. James C. O’Brien sent over on the seventh minute and Bruree looked to be settling in. However, Bruree could only add one more score, a James V. O’Brien point from play, in the remaining twenty three minutes. Murroe/Boher added four to their tally to leave Bruree trailing by 0-5 to 1-4 at the break. The two point difference was not insurmountable but it took Bruree twenty five minutes of the second half to get into the game. In that period Donal Deady had converted three frees and Gerard O’Brien had added another point from play. However, Murroe/Boher had run up a tally of eleven points to stretch their lead to nine points. A late surge from Bruree saw them tag this lead back to five by the final whistle thanks to points from play from Tommy O’Brien, Stephen O’Halloran, Gerard O’Brien, Paddy Kelly and James V. O’Brien to Murroe/Boher’s one. This left the final score Bruree 0-14 Murroe/Boher 1-16. Bruree are now left in the position of fighting relegation once again. We are awaiting news of our opposition and hoping that this team can pick up the pieces and face this task.

The Bruree team was Daniel Lane, Brian O’Rourke, John O’Brien, Andrew Sexton, Shane Mullane, Stephen McDonogh, Dessie Lenihan, James Charles O’Brien, James Vincent O’Brien, Donal Deady, Jimmy O’Dea, Michael Lane, Tommy O’Brien, Stephen O’Halloran, Gerard O’Brien, Eamon Sexton, Paddy Kelly, Brendan Hogan, Gerard O’Dea, Declan Sexton, Vincent Stanton, Patrick Deady, David Hogan.

Junior Hurling: Our Junior hurlers travelled to Ballyagran to play Kilmallock in the South championship. After a disaster of a start, an under strength Bruree played some great hurling for twenty minutes to trail by just four points at half time. However, Kilmallock started the second half the stronger and quickly built up an unassailable lead. A goal and a point early in the first half seemed to indicate that Kilmallock would dominate this game. But a goal from Sean Deane from a high ball in from David Hogan signalled a Bruree renaissance seven minutes into the game. A couple of more Kilmallock points were quickly cancelled out by points from play from Eamon Sexton and Michael Mullane as well as three converted frees from David Hogan. The closing ten minutes of the half saw Kilmallock run up a total of seven points, three from frees, interrupted only by a pointed free from David Hogan. This left the half time score Bruree 1-6 Kilmallock 1-10. A Kilmallock goal early in the second half turned the game away from Bruree and it was Kilmallock who dominated the scoring for the half hour. Four points from David Hogan, three from frees, were Bruree’s only return during the half, seeing Kilmallock run out 2-18 to 1-10 winners.

Under 21 Football: Bruree turned in a creditable performance when scoring a good win over Castletown/Ballyagran in the county semi-final at Bruree. Bruree got off to a quick start with four unanswered points from play in the opening ten minutes from Brian O’Rourke, Donal Deady, Tommy O’Brien and Michael Lane. Goals from William Kelly and Michael Lane stretched Bruree lead further before points from play from Patrick Deady, Donal Deady and Michael Lane and a pointed free from Brian O’Rourke gave Bruree a 2-1 to 1-2 half time advantage. Bruree’s defence stood firm, clearing any attempts by the visitors to score. Bruree eased off a little in the second half but goals from William Kelly and Michael Lane as well as points from play from Michael Lane and Brian O’Rourke left the final score Bruree 4-10 Castletown/Ballyagran 2-4.

Junior A Football: After a good start against Kilmallock at Bruree on Monday night in the South championship, Bruree had to come from behind in the closing minutes to earn a draw. An early pointed free from Stephen O’Halloran followed by a well taken goal from John O’Brien gave Bruree an early lead. However, Kilmallock tacked on 1-6 without reply until Stephen O’Halloran pointed from play in the closing minutes to leave the half time score Bruree 1-2 Kilmallock 1-6. The sides exchanged point in the opening twenty minutes of the second half with Paddy Kelly and Shane Mullane (2) providing Bruree’s scores. In the closing minutes John O’Brien found the Kilmallock net fro his second gaol and John O’Halloran levelled matters with a point from play. This left the final score Bruree 2-6 Kilmallock 1-9. The Bruree team was Pat O’Shea, Chris Sexton, Anthony O’Shea, Andrew Sexton, Vincent Stanton, Jimmy O’Dea, Shane Mullane, James c. O’Brien, Brian Morrissey, Michael Lane, John O’Brien, Tommy O’Brien, Brian O’Rourke, Stephen O’Halloran, Paddy Kelly, Sean Deane, John O’Halloran, Donal Deady, Dessie Lenihan, Gerad O’Dea, Patrick Deady, Philip Hogan, Niall Broderick.
